The project objective was to design and equip a port facility for the clients operations safely and expeditiously. This world first state of the art facility is located along the North West Coast of Australia and is the largest fully automated iron ore port laboratory in the world.


The unique aspect of this laboratory is the fact that it handles samples from a time-based sampling regime. This results in a shorter duration between samples, meaning that the equipment is placed under additional load when compared to a traditional mass-based sampling method. Manually processing this volume of sample would be logistically impossible, with 40 kilogram samples arriving every 90 seconds in the worst case scenario.


The automated system consists of four large robots operating on two 20 meter long tracks servicing machines for sample dividing, rapid sample drying, natural or dry lump sieving, dry fines sieving, moisture determination, splitting, archiving, weighing, sample preparation and automated XRF and four point TGA analysis. The entire process from the sample stations to final analysis is fully automated. It fully complies to ISO 3082, and IMP designed the laboratory to offer maximum safety and unquestionable quality with maximum production redundancy and efficiency. The entire project including the building was designed and delivered on a turnkey basis.


It will not only serve as a facility that produces fast accurate analytical data for the port but will also serve as a marketing tool for the client, to demonstrate to stake holders the commitment to quality and good corporate governance.
